Software Engineering Intern

London (expect 5 days in office)Internship, flexible duration (approx 10 weeks)

About us

Telluvian is a London-based, VC-backed pre-seed startup. We use mechanistic interpretability, our understanding of what's happening inside neural networks, to make AI cheaper and more secure. Learn more at www.telluvian.ai.

The role

We're looking for an intern to work on the infrastructure our research and product depend on. This is primarily an engineering role rather than a research one, but you'll be working next to interpretability researchers, and you'll need to understand what they're doing well enough to know how it should shape what you build.

You'll join a team of fewer than ten people, and you'll be given a real project rather than a manufactured one. You'll have someone senior to go to when you're stuck, but a lot of the work will still be yours to figure out.

This is a full time position with flexible working hours. We ask that you're in person in the London office a minimum of four days a week.

We recruit interns on a rolling basis, so start dates are flexible. Tell us when you're available.

What you'll do

  • Cloud infrastructure and resource management. Configuring compute, minimising costs, keeping things up.
  • Work on inference for our ML systems. Getting models served reliably and efficiently. This is the hardest part of the role and the part we expect you to learn on the job.
  • Hosting and maintaining our website. Occasional minor changes; this is not a frontend role.
  • General backend engineering across the stack.

What we're looking for

  • Currently studying, or recently graduated from, a computer science or related STEM subject.
  • Comfortable writing Python.
  • Some exposure to machine learning through coursework, personal projects, or self-study.
  • Curious, self-motivated, and happy working in a small, fast paced team.
  • Working familiarity with ML concepts. We aren't looking for you to do novel research, but you should understand what a model is doing and why it matters for the system.

Nice to have

  • Experience with standard Python frameworks e.g. NumPy PyTorch and Transformers.
  • No requirement to have particular experience in model interpretability research.
  • Eagerness to start your own projects.
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • DevOps: CI/CD, containers, infrastructure as code.
  • Any exposure to serving or scaling ML models.

What we offer

  • Close proximity to frontier interpretability research, and direct access to the people building the company.
  • Flexible working and genuine autonomy over how you approach the work.
  • Direct mentorship from experienced software developers day to day.
  • A front-row view of how an early-stage startup is built.
  • A meaningful project you can talk about and show off afterwards.
  • Possible conversion to a return or full time offer.

How to apply

Send a CV and cover letter to careers@telluvian.ai. The process is an initial screening followed by an online interview and an in-person paid work test.

We unfortunately don't have the capacity to provide visa sponsorship at this time.

As part of your email please tell us when you could start and how long you're available for.
